After temporarily saying goodbye to their cat for 2 months, person works incredibly hard to make enough money for the cat's medication, and gets the feline back with new hope: 'I made sure to visit him at the shelter every chance that I got'

Being a good cat owner can mean a lot of different things, including letting the cat go when you know that you cannot take care of them anymore. 

Personally, as a cat owner, I can tell you this: most of the decisions that you will make as a cat owner will be easy ones. If your cat is acting up, you take the cat to the vet, no matter how much you know she doesn't want you to. If your cat is at the vet's and the vet tells you the treatment will be expensive, you take your wallet out and you pay, because your cat is family, and you treat it as such. If your cat is chonky - and yes, that is my cat's situation right meow - you put them on a diet, and you sit there and suffer while they scream for more food. Because it is the right thing to do. 

One situation that I have thankfully never had to face was not being able to take care of my cat anymore. I've been privileged enough to be healthy enough and stable enough to provide her with the spoiled lifestyle she deserves. And honestly, I don't know if I would have been able to make the decision that this person on r/cats did. Becuase it truly is one of the most difficult ones. But I hope I would have. Because if you can't take care of your cat, then the best decision you can make for it is… taking the cat to a place where it will be taken care of. In this person's case, it was surrendering the cat to a shelter. A terrible thing inherently, but the right thing to do given their situation. And now that they are better off financially, they were able to reunite with their cat and take it back to a home that's good enough for him.

    GroundbreakingCry734 I am so happy for you both!!!! Congrats on the new job, but more than that, congrats on being able to care for your handsome boy again. I've recently begun the insulin journey and between the meds and the twice monthly glucose curves, it is not cheap! You two are lucky to have each other.

  • He might be annoyed with you, but it's okay. It's worth it. They don't always understand it when we make difficult decisions for them, but they are always worth it. Because their well-being always comes first.

That's what cats do! After the appropriate amount of time, he will be snuggling up to you every chance he gets!

  • It really is true love. Only someone who truly loves their cat would be able to let them go if that was what was best for them. And that is what you did.
